What is an endodontist?
An endodontist is a dental surgeon who specialises in treating
endodontic problems (endo-within, dontic-tooth). In general, this involves root
canal treatment.
The title endodontist or specialist in endodontics may only be used by a dental
surgeon who has completed a postgraduate specialist training pathway approved by
the General Dental Council (GDC). This involves three years of full time study
dedicated to the specialty A specialist in the field of endodontics will
normally have the letters MSc (Master of Science) or MClinDent (Master of
Clinical Dentistry) and often MRD (Membership in Restorative Dentistry) after
his/her name. He or she will have been awarded a certificate of specialist
training by the GDC.
There are currently around 120 specialist endodontists on the Dental Register in
the United Kingdom.
